Veterinarians want an exemption from Sarasota County’s new rules to prevent the sales of animals from “puppy mills” or “kitten factories.”

The doctors believe the new rules may prevent them from placing animals of former clients in new homes.

The Herald-Tribune reports when the county sent letters to breeders and animal organizations ahead of the vote on the rule, veterinarians’ work placing animals came up as an issue.

County commissioner Christine Robinson has asked staff to meet with animal groups and kennel clubs to increase outreach ahead of two workshops to receive feedback.

County administrator Tom Harmer says that feedback can go into suggestions for changes to the rules.
