Venice is trying something new to better handle public trash disposal, and the Sun will be a big part of the process.

The city has installed several solar powered trash compactors in Michael Biehl Park and along Venice Avenue from Nassau to Nokomis. The Herald-Tribune reports each 32-gallon unit’s leak proof and holds 5-times the trash as a regular trash can, because they have a solar powered compactor. Venice is renting the compactors on a trial basis for $169/month. Each one has a separate space for recyclables. The units even notifty sanitation crews, via Wi-Fi, when they’re full.
