Venice Regional Bayfront Health continues working to clean up its image after spending a lot of time and money in recent months cleaning up after a sewer spill, an air-conditioning leak, and a rodent infestation. The quick succession of issues led to threats of losing Medicare funding, which provides about 70 percent of the hospital’s income. However, outside of these recent issues, Venice Regional had had no violations serious enough to threaten Medicare funding in its five decades of participation in the program, according to the Herald-Tribune, that compared to over one-third of all Florida hospitals being cited in just the past 10 years, including 62 with multiple citations that, in some cases, resulted in patient deaths.
