The Venice Fire Department wants people to grill safely.

The department cites U.S. Fire Administration information showing grill accidents kill 10 people annually. They also cause 100 injuries and $37 million in property loss.

The firefighters advise people to keep grills 10 feet from their homes, deck railings, and overhanging branches.

Only use charcoal starter fluid to start the charcoal. The fire department says never use gas or other flammable igniters, and never use starter fluid with heated coals.

Additionally, keep kids at least three feet from the grill, dispose of ashes in metal containers, and periodically remove grease and fat from the trays below the grill.
