Veterans in Southwest Florida may be able to work for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s office. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has given the sheriff’s office approval to train veterans and family members of disabled veterans, or surviving family members of veterans, for a training program. The sheriff’s office can now offer on-the-job training for Communications Operator/Dispatcher, Corrections Deputy and Deputy Sheriff. Under the program, hired veterans can receive GI Bill payments to supplement their income while being paid a trainee wage. Post-9/11 veterans are also eligible for a housing allowance from the VA.
