Florida Gov. Rick Scott is calling on the state’s top education leaders and officials to examine its grading system and school standards.
Scott says that Florida’s A-to-F grading system is a national model but has a reached a “critical” point. He has asked interim Education Commissioner Pam Stewart to convene a three-day summit next week in Clearwater.
The governor’s action comes in the wake of the abrupt resignation of Education Commissioner Tony Bennett.
Bennett resigned in early August following allegations that he changed the grade of a charter school run by a major Republican donor during his previous job in Indiana.
Bennett in July pushed for a change to Florida’s grading system that helped more than 150 schools avoid getting an F grade.
