It was a scandal that led to the resignation of the Sarasota Police Chief. Now, the case of a former Guatemalan dishwasher who sued the city over excessive use of police force has been settled. Sarasota’s insurance company agreeing to pay 23-year-old Juan Perez forty thousand dollars to end the suit. The legal fallout continues, however. The scandal prompted Sarasota to create a new citizen panel to oversee the police department. Several officers were disciplined after the investigation, the officer involved was fired but he has appealed, and his case is still working through the legal system.
