SCAMS are on the rise. In October alone, Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office received and is investigating several cryptocurrency cases that totaled approximately $371,800 in losses. These crimes are generally due to scams received via email, phone, and computer pop-ups.
Our elderly citizens are the ones who get scammed most often. If you have senior citizens in your family or neighborhood, please help us advise them to avoid sharing personal information. If payment is requested for something with gift cards, bitcoin, or anything unusual, they should stop communication with the individual(s). This could help reduce the number of victims.
