City Commissioners in Sarasota today expected to consider placing new surveillance cameras along Martin Luther King, Junior, Boulevard in Newtown in an effort to deter crime. City police already have deployed eleven surveillance cameras in areas of Fredd Atkins Park, where they’ve reportedly cut crime in half since they were installed in 2006. Twenty-one cameras are in use by the Sarasota Housing Authority. The proposed cameras in Newtown would cost 100-thousand dollars and be paid for form teh city’s special taxing district.
