Researchers are continuing their efforts to determine whether recently-detected blooms of red algae are posing threats to Sun Coast beaches. Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory say they’re monitoring the so-called “red tide” that was discovered off some area beaches last week, reaching what are called “medium levels” off Manasota Key. Lower levels have been detected off a number of other area beaches although a higher concentration was noted at Venice Beach. Researchers now determining if there’s a true threat or if these are only isolated outbreaks.
