The previous employer of the police officer who killed a woman Tuesday asked him to resign before he came here.

Punta Gorda Police say Lee Coel remains on paid administrative leave.

This follows the shooting death of 73-year-old Mary Knowlton.

The investigation continues into how and why Coel’s gun contained live ammunition instead of blanks.

Records show Coel took the job in Punta Gorda two years ago after the Miramar Police Department asked him to resign.

He had failed a field training program.

Earlier this year, someone filed a lawsuit against Punta Gorda Police and the city, accusing Coel of excessive force.

It claimed he used his K9 to help take down a man on a bike, but failed to call off the dog for nearly two minutes.
