The search for a missing Venice man was helped greatly by his participation in a program known as Project Lifesaver. James Mondello had walked off from an assisted living facility Tuesday night, and police were able to concentrate their search for him at first light yesterday in an area indicated by a GPS-enabled device he was wearing. Within a few hours of the start of the search, Venice Police boat patrol members found Mondello along the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway a half mile south of Caspersen Beach. He was out of sight, laying deep within the roots of the mangroves, and along the water’s edge. Though unhurt, he was exhausted and could not get out.
