A single-car accident early today killed a Punta Gorda man. Thirty-five-year-old Jeremy Backus was a passenger in a car driven by Charles Moore of Punta Gorda. Police say two wheels of Moore’s car left the pavement while he was making a turn from Park Drive onto Taralane shortly before three o’clock this morning. Officers say Backus, the passenger, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car, then run over by its rear wheels. He died at Charlotte Regional Medical Center.
