The thousands of homeowners in Southwest Florida who don’t want Florida Power and Light smart meters can have it their way, but they’ll have to pay a fee to opt out. NBC2 reports those customers will be charged a one-time $95 fee plus a $13 monthly service charge because their meters will need to be read by a human. FPL says the fee is the only fair way to pass along the cost associated with standard meters.
