This is now week two of the state legislature’s final 60-day session with plans to address the ongoing opioid epidemic.

A Senate committee is considering bill SB 8, a bill aimed to fight the opioid crisis. The bill would limit opioid prescriptions to a three day supply or -only in acute pain situations- a seven day supply.

Doctors would also be required to check patients’ prescription records before giving them any opioids. They’d also be enrolled in continuing education courses on prescribing the drugs.

Under the bill, all doctors would also have to check a state prescription drug database to see patients’ histories before writing an opioid prescription.
