Residents of North Port could be seeing a big hike in their tax rate to cover the costs of a host of new projects.

The city announced this week that the city’s tax rate would increase by nearly 25 percent.

The city says the money would go towards the costs of hiring four new police officers, outfitting the department with body cameras, operating costs of the North Port Aquatic Center and adjustments to employee salaries.

Currently, the property tax rate would only cover $19 million of a needed $47.6M in general fund revenues.
