New protocols in place at Sarasota Memorial Hospital following state allegations of inadequate treatment of a diabetic woman who miscarried twins in July. State inspectors blamed a physician and a nurse for leaving the woman mostly unattended for ten hours in the emergency room and failing to monitor her glucose levels or control her pain. That complaint triggered an investigation into Sarasota Memorial’s qualifications for receiving Medicare payments, which made up more than half the hospital’s revenues lat year. Now, hospital executives say new protocols and better understanding of patients’ needs are being emphasized.
