The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify the man seen with James Brotherton shortly before he was murdered on November 21st.

Surveillance photos and video show Brotherton and a man in black clothing at the Beneva Village Bank of America ATM at 11:49 p.m. Brotherton was shot about four minutes later at Curtiss Avenue and Gulf Gate Drive and his body was found there at 12:30 a.m., by a deputy on routine patrol. His vehicle was located near Stickney Point Road and Gateway Drive around 5:20 a.m.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Criminal Investigations at 941-861-4952 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-TIPS (8477), online at or via text message by texting TIP109 plus a message to CRIMES (274637). Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
