With Memorial Day weekend ahead Charlotte County and Sarasota County Sheriff’s offices want to remind you of a few safety tips while on the water.
Charlotte County Sheriff’s Department:
Always have the necessary safety equipment on board. (For a list of these items, visit: bit.ly/3PMAoVp)
Stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
There will be a TON of boaters on the water and it’s vital to stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
NEVER drink and drive. Lives depend on the sobriety of boat operators.
Follow all navigation rules and drive responsibly.
Our Marine and Aviation Units will be out over the weekend to help make sure everyone has a safe weekend. We’re here if you need us!
Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department:
If you are heading out on the water this holiday weekend, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Bring enough properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone aboard.
Check safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, flares, horn, on-board radio and throwable devices.
Make sure you have up-to-date fishing licenses and vessel registration. Know size requirements and what fish are in season.
Be mindful of your surroundings, obey speed signs and channel markers, and watch for swimmers or marine life such as manatees.
Consuming alcoholic beverages will affect perception, reaction time and decision-making. Don’t drink and boat!
