A determination on whether the venue for the trial of Cassandra Smith, the woman charged with DUI and the death of Deputy Christopher Taylor in Charlotte County, will be changed rests in the hands of a judge.

Cassandra Smith faces allegations of driving under the influence, leading to a fatal collision with Deputy Christopher Taylor in November 2022.

Currently scheduled to commence on Tuesday, Smith’s trial took a potential turn during her recent court appearance when her attorney sought a change of venue. The judge emphasized a desire to avoid further delays in the legal proceedings.

The incident unfolded last year when Deputy Taylor was engaged in a traffic stop along Interstate 75. According to investigators, Smith veered across three lanes of traffic, resulting in a collision that claimed Deputy Taylor’s life.

The judge is expected to render a decision on the change of venue request on Thursday.
