Good news for green sea turtles: Mote Marine Laboratory is reporting a record number of nests for the current season that began May 1 along beaches from Longboat Key to Venice. Green sea turtles have established 36 nests in the area, breaking the previous record of 30 set in 2013. Monitoring is in its 34th year. Loggerhead turtles are also having a good showing, but their numbers won’t be confirmed until after the season ends on October 31. Scientists are also looking at a possible loggerhead-hawksbill hybrid nest for only the third time since monitoring began.
