VENICE- Tennis players at the Englewood Sports Complex got a bit of a shock this week when an alligator showed up on the court. Mating season has begun and typically lasts through June.

Gators across much of southwest Florida are moving from bodies of water, like lakes and retention ponds, to dry land as male gators search for female mates. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the hotter weather is also impacting their movement.

Not only are adult males on the move searching for females, but they’re also pushing smaller males out of their territories. That means those smaller ones are also out looking for new spots.
