Florida DOT will install about nine miles of fencing along Alligator Alley between FakaUnion Canal Bridge and the Naples toll booth in order to complete fencing along the entire highway and improve safety for vehicles and wildlife in the area. The project was approved after a recent study by the Florida Wildlife Federation into the rising number of Florida panthers killed by vehicles on the state’s highways. The animal has been on the U.S. Endangered Species List since 1967 despite critics who say that there is no difference between Florida panthers and pumas.
