175,000 Pounds of Lettuce!
Manatee UME Update: Thanks to the support of our partner at the Temporary Field Response Station, the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, and our FWC and USFWS biologists this winter, over 175,000 pounds of lettuce has been offered to manatees affected by the unusual mortality event along the Atlantic Coast.
The Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida is raising money to support the supplemental feeding of manatees in the Indian River Lagoon. Learn how you can support their efforts and the Marine Mammal Fund: http://bit.ly/3HfiGXe and http://bit.ly/3jHr2z7
Other ways to help manatees is by giving them space, going slow & looking out below when boating, and reporting any sick, injured, orphaned or dead manatees to our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). Leave any feeding to the experts – feeding by the public is harmful and illegal. Only FWC and USFWS personnel are authorized to offer manatees supplemental food and are doing so in ways that prevent negative impacts to manatee behavior, health and habitat.
