Critical Injuries in Monday Crash

Hospital officials say a Rotonda woman remains in crit­i­cal con­di­tion fol­low­ing a single-car crash about noon yesterday. Joyce N. Math­ews was taken by heli­copter to Lee Memo­r­ial Hos­pi­tal Mon­day after she lost control going around a curve on Rotonda Boule­vard West east of Placida Road. Accord­ing to the Florida High­way Patrol report, Math­ews was headed east on Rotonda Boule­vard West about noon Mon­day when her car left the road and crossed through a ditch. The car’s right side struck sev­eral trees before head­ing into a heavy pal­metto patch and strik­ing an oak tree.
