Last year, the event was a half triathlon, and it attracted 1,000 participants and generated $1-million for the local economy. For 2014 organizers want a full 140-plus mile triathlon. Organizers say they can get the bike riders away over the Venice Avenue bridge in about an hour. The problem is how long it will take for them to come back over the north Business U.S. 41 bridge over Hatchett Creek. The drawbridges are the only way to the island from land, and they’re also opened to let boating traffic through the Intracoastal Waterway.
