A Charlotte County-based bank is making history by being the first-ever whole bank to be acquired by a credit union. Calusa Bank is in the process of being bought by Dunedin-based Achieva Credit Union for $23 million. Government regulators approved the acquisition on Dec. 1. Previous deals involved only majority acquisition of assets and deposits, making this deal the first of its kind in the state. Achieva is looking to expand its presence along the Gulf Coast while Calusa’s leadership is looking to get out of the banking industry.
