The Florida Dept. of Children and Family Services says the state’s system to protect children has failed after two recent deaths in our area. Sec. Mike Carroll went before a state Senate panel late last week, saying he has ordered a review of the state’s abuse hotline. Someone called that hotline the day after Chance Walsh was born, but no action was taken. The infant’s remains were recently found in a wooded North Port area. While 11-year-old Janiya Thomas is still officially listed as missing, her remains are suspected to be those found in a freezer dropped off at a family member’s home earlier this month.
