A woman has identified herself to The Associated Press as a longtime friend of Mary Knowlton.
Carolyn Hartwigsen of Edina, Minn. says Knowlton had a love of books, and tried instilling that in young readers.
Hartwigsen says the Knowltons would periodically return to Minnesota to visit.
She claims the couple had two sons over a half-century of marriage.
