Two people have been sentenced for their part in an opiate and human smuggling case. A Tampa judge sentenced 60-year-old Sarasota doctor Fred Joseph and a 61-year-old former anesthesiologist from Osprey to prison for improperly prescribing opiates and attempting to smuggle a Hungarian national into the United States. Each was sentenced to 12 years and seven months after a jury found them guilty after an undercover sting in 2015. The two asked the undercover agent to smuggle in the Hungarian national, in return the doctor prescribed opiates and paid $5 thousand in cash for the transaction, Turner was ordered to pay $232,020 and Cannata was ordered to pay $73,148.
