A study from RealtyTrac shows 14 percent of homeowners in the Sarasota-Manatee region remain “seriously underwater.”

The Herald-Tribune reports over 35,000 homeowners in that area owe at least 25 percent more on their mortgages than their properties’ total value.

However, that 14 percent comes in lower from the same time last year.

The region ranks 37th among the nation’s largest metro areas for the share of seriously underwater homes.

In Charlotte County, 15.2 percent of homeowners fall into this category. That puts nearly 12,000 homes under water.

Agian, though, that 15.2 percent sits below the number from last year.
