County and city officials say there are too many properties on the maps with the high flood risk classification. The Herald-Tribune reports the revised maps would add 42,700 properties. Owners of the land would have to get flood insurance and be subject too much tougher building codes. The final count’s not expected to be that high. Local officials say FEMA may have gone a little overboard using street flooding and drainage ditch spillovers as reasons to include properties in flood risk zones. There’s no firm date on when FEMA will issue the final flood risk maps.
