Florida DEP’s been very quietly considering a proposal to lease 6630 acres of the 37,000 plus acre Park for grazing by domesticated livestock. According to the Herald-Tribune, the idea may getting attention because Gov. Scott and the Legislature want to see how much commercial revenue can be generated by parks. What the parks can generate on their own, means the state could spend less on their maintenance and upkeep. This isn’t a new concept. There’ve been proposals for golf courses and private campgrounds, which were buried by strong public oppositon. Coincidentally, Myakka River State Parks management plan is due for its’ 10-year update.
