Transdev Services, Inc. of Illinois’ filed a proposal to merge both public transit systems and take them private. The herald-Tribune reports Transdev’s proposal says it could save $2.5-million annually for taxpayers through cutting duplication of services. The combined bus service would be named SMART-“Sarasota Manatee Area Regional Transit.” Public transit’s getting more attention across Southwest Florida with governments trying to find a way to deal with more and more people on the roads. Ridership on both systems has been steadily climbing. Trandev’s proposal has been sent to administrators of both counties, but so far, they’re not commenting.
