A youth soccer Saturday in Wichita ended in grief this weekend. Around 3:25 p.m., a Chevrolet pickup drove onto the fields at Stryker Sports Complex in east Wichita, striking multiple people. Six-year-old Cole Adrian and thirty-five-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson and not related, died at the scene. Eleven others were hospitalized with traumatic injuries, including children ages five to nine and adults up to sixty-eight.
The driver, a thirty-four-year-old woman, was taken into custody and later released pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the pickup. No charges have been filed, and investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash. Two of the driver’s children were in the vehicle at the time, and a third was playing soccer on a different field.
For Suncoast families, the story resonates. From Sarasota to Bradenton to Venice, weekend youth sports draw thousands of us to fields where vehicles and players often share close quarters. Wichita’s police chief said the victims’ families should know they are not alone. If you’re at the fields this weekend, take a moment to look around and think about what safety looks like in your own community. What changes would you want to see at local sports complexes?
