A veteran who calls Bradenton home has been sentenced to home detention after a guilty plea of defrauding the government. Why? Because he pretended to be blind. 71-years-old Doyle Mullins Jr., who is indeed a veteran of the Vietnam War, claimed to be blind and unable to work, drive or keep his home in order. Even worse it went on from 1995-2017 before he was found out. Mullins Jr. received thousands of dollars monthly for recurring disability payments, grants for a car and medical benefits payments to his wife. An investigation found Mullins mowing his lawn, going to the bank and, of course, driving his car. He pleaded guilty in the fall of last year and is ordered to repay nearly $600,000. He also is ordered to nine months of home detention followed by five years of probation.
