Venice residents will have the final say-so as to whether a new public safety complex should be built on government owned land. According to the Herald-Tribune, that could save up to two million dollars in projected land cost. The new police and emergency operations center will be a 25-thousand square foot facility. The project will be funded by a 16 million dollar bond issue that was approved by residents last November. On Tuesday, the Venice City Council voted unanimously to place a referendum on the project on the ballot for May or November. Most of the council is actually opposed to going along with a staff recommending to lcoate the complex on a 28-acre section of Pinebrook Park north of Curry Creek. Another option is putting together 10 acres of land on the southern side of Wellfield Park fronting Ridgewood Avenue and including the existing police station and fire training facilities.
