For the next two months, the cities of Venice and North Port are under a rabies alert. That follows a pair of attacks by bobcats in east Venice, both taking place between Venice Avenue and U.S. 41. The Florida Department of Health for Sarasota County advises residents to keep pet food stored inside, secure garbage containers, and keep a close eye on your pets. The rabies virus can be spread through an animal bite or scratch and, without medical treatment, is usually fatal. If you see an aggressive or ill animal, you’re asked to call the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
