A new housing project in Venice is now largely dependent on the approval of the Sarasota City Commission. In order to apply for the most viable financing option, the Venice Housing Authority’s needs approval by the Sarasota City Commission to spend $500,000 in federal fund on the 52-unit public housing project. Should the Sarasota City Commission approve the project, the funding commitment is scheduled to go before the Sarasota County Commission on Oct. 10. Don Hadsell, director of the Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development, told the Herald-Tribune that the city of Sarasota is the lead agency in applying for public housing money because it entered the process in the 1970s, while Sarasota County didn’t enter the process until the 1990s.
