Two men have been sentenced for running an organized retail theft operation that pulled $362,844 in merchandise from Walmart stores across eleven states over ten months, beginning in 2022. Anthony Belser, 56, received 25 years with 10 to serve. George Mayo, 52, received 40 years with 20 to serve. Both were ordered to pay $328,448 in restitution.
Their method involved hiding higher-priced items inside larger boxes and paying only for the lower-value product at checkout. Investigators connected the thefts using security footage, credit card transactions, bank records, and rental car contracts. The thefts reached Florida along with Georgia, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Prosecutors in Cherokee County, Georgia, charged the case under the state’s RICO Act, which let them treat the thefts as a single criminal enterprise rather than isolated incidents. District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway said the sentences reflect how seriously her office pursues organized retail crime.
