Two Men Indicted in Separate Overdose Homicide Cases
PUNTA GORDA – A grand jury indicted two men Thursday on first-degree homicide charges for their alleged roles in separate fatal overdose cases, as announced by State Attorney Amira Fox at a news conference held at the Charlotte County Justice Center.
Scott Kyle Wright, 37, and Robert Anthony Doxen, 19, face charges for allegedly selling drugs that led to overdose deaths. While the cases are unrelated, they carry equally severe charges under Florida’s laws addressing overdose homicides.
“We will hold people accountable to the highest extent of the law for distributing drugs…like fentanyl, that kill people,” Fox said, underscoring the commitment to addressing fatal drug sales.
The charges against Wright stem from an incident in April when he allegedly sold fentanyl, while Doxen’s charges relate to an overdose that occurred in 2023. Both men face multiple charges, including first-degree homicide by overdose, sale or delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. The homicide charge, a capital felony, could potentially carry the death penalty, Fox noted.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell joined Fox in offering condolences to the families affected by the overdoses and affirmed his office’s commitment to combating drug distribution. “Addiction is a disease, but it should not have to be a death sentence,” he said, pledging that the Narcotics Unit would continue its pursuit of drug dealers.
These indictments follow the recent case of Venice resident Lacey Shaver, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison with an additional 10 years of probation after pleading no-contest to a similar overdose homicide charge.
