The trial for the former Punta Gorda police officer who shot and killed a senior citizen at a citizen’s academy last year will likely not go on trial until next year. Lee Coel was in court Thursday after his lawyer requested a phone log of calls to the Punta Gorda police involving a K9 demonstration days before the fatal shooting. The judge granted the motion, despite no explanation as to how the K9 demo related to the shooting. Attorney Alvin Entin claimed Coel’s gun was filled with blanks at the K9 demo, and the calls would prove Coel was there.
