A mother and her four young children died after an overnight fire in a mobile home in Van Zandt County, Texas, about an hour east of Dallas. Firefighters were dispatched just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and found four children still trapped inside. Crews breached an exterior wall and pulled them from a bedroom, but three died at the scene; a fourth child and the mother died after being flown to a hospital. The children were a 3-year-old girl and three boys ages 5, 8 and 10. Three other people escaped on their own, and two were hospitalized as a precaution.
The Canton school district confirmed that some of the children were its students, releasing a statement expressing profound sadness at the loss of students at Canton Elementary and Canton Intermediate Schools. The Van Zandt County fire marshal’s office says the investigation into the cause is in its early stages, and the family has not been publicly identified.
For families here on the Suncoast, this tragedy is a difficult but important reminder about fire preparedness, especially in older mobile homes and manufactured housing. Working smoke alarms on every level, a planned escape route with two ways out of each room, and a meeting spot outside can make the difference when a fire starts while everyone is asleep. It is also worth checking on neighbors who live alone or have children in the home. Have you tested the smoke alarms in your home this month?
