A morning bus stop turned frightening in Henrico County, Virginia, on Friday when police say a 47-year-old woman approached students waiting for the Ratcliffe Elementary bus and punched a 9-year-old boy she did not know. According to Henrico Police, Marie Tulette Marsh walked up around 7:30 a.m. as the bus was arriving and struck the child in the face. The boy’s screams caught the attention of a nearby resident, who ran outside, pulled him away, brought him to the porch and called 911. The child suffered facial injuries but is expected to recover.

Marsh has been charged with assault and battery and has a court hearing scheduled for December 14. Ratcliffe Elementary principal Joy Reed called the incident isolated and said counselors are supporting students who ride that bus. Neighbors, meanwhile, are processing what happened on a sidewalk they walk every day. One resident told local reporters he was devastated, noting his nieces and nephews grew up at that same stop, while another said he’s now paying closer attention to who is around the bus stop each morning.

The case touches a nerve for any family with a school-day routine, whether you’re in Henrico or here on the Gulf Coast. Practical takeaways from law enforcement and school safety experts are familiar ones: know your children’s route, introduce yourself to neighbors along it, and teach kids to yell, run toward a known safe house and tell an adult immediately. As hurricane season reminds us every year, neighbors looking out for neighbors is a resource no agency can replace. Do you know the families at your morning bus stop? Tell us in the comments.
