Some residents of Longboat Key are firing back at Florida Senator Greg Steube over his plan to end the ability of cities or counties to regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb. Longboat Key residents have long been restricted to one rental every 30 days, but Steube’s bill would revoke the town’s rights and allow anyone with a home to rent it for any amount of time, so long as they have a license. Joseph McElmeel, the president of the Republican Club of Longboat Key, wrote to Steube, also a Republican, and said because of his opposition would never “attend another Republican Club of Longboat Key event and would encourage his fellow Republicans to do the same.”
