A Monday afternoon drive through Punta Gorda turned into a road rage case that put one man in handcuffs. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says a red pickup intentionally blew thick black smoke at the white SUV behind it, sparking hand gestures and a heated exchange. The SUV driver, Stephan M. Clark, then re-engaged the pickup and pulled a gun from his waistband, deputies said.
Fearing for his safety, the pickup driver drew his own firearm and fired at the front tire of Clark’s SUV, aiming to disable the vehicle and call law enforcement rather than hit Clark. Deputies arrived to find bullet holes and a flat tire. A detailed description of Clark’s firearm from the pickup driver contradicted Clark’s claim that he never drew a weapon, according to investigators.
Clark was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. The pickup driver faces no charges, and the State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. Road rage incidents like this one raise real questions about self-defense, armed drivers, and how quickly a minor traffic provocation can turn dangerous on Suncoast roads.
