Siesta Key Oyster Bar’s Dollar-Bill Wall Became a Lifeline for Staff After Hurricane Milton

If you’ve spent any time at Siesta Key Oyster Bar, you’ve seen the walls and ceiling covered in signed dollar bills. That tradition started in 2003 as a promise to local fishermen, and over the years it turned into a collection of memories from visitors all over the world. Then Hurricane Milton flooded the restaurant in October 2024, forcing a 15-day closure and leaving employees without customers, tips, or paychecks.

The staff found a way to help each other. They counted up all those hanging dollar bills and gave the money to employees facing financial hardship. One worker, Cali Gill, used her share to buy food and necessities for herself and her daughter. As the team put it, when they needed help, it was there because the restaurant had been so generous first. When the doors reopened, employees came back to help rebuild.

The restaurant is open again, the walls are filling back up with new dollar bills, and each year the wall money now goes to people affected by natural disasters. It’s a Suncoast tradition that keeps paying forward, one dollar at a time.
