Charlotte County’s sheriff wants to remind people of scams targeting senior citizens.

He says financial scams often go unreported, and prosecuting them can prove difficult.

The sheriff identifies two of the most prevelant ones as Medicare and health insurance scams, and Internet fraud.

In the former, people may pose as Medicare representatives so the elderly can give them personal information, or to provide fake services for the elderly at makeshift mobile clinics.

As far as Internet fraud goes, the sheriff says to watch out for pop-up browser windows that can you into downloading a fake anti-virus program or a real virus that opens your computer to scammers. Additionally, beware of email scams that appear to involve legitimate companeis.
