Saturday is shaping up to be the best beach day of the weekend, but only if you get out there early. Water temperatures on the Suncoast are holding near 88 to 89 degrees, the rip current risk is low, and the surf is minimal. Conditions are close to perfect for a morning swim along Siesta Key or a paddle in Sarasota Bay. The catch? Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop mainly between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and they could bring gusty winds. The heat index will also push toward 100 degrees, so hydration and sunscreen are non-negotiable if you plan to spend time outside.
For boaters, the news is encouraging. Light chop and seas at 1 foot or less are expected through Tuesday, making for smooth cruising on the Gulf. But Sunday through Tuesday, the storm coverage increases, so it’s a good idea to check the radar before heading out later in the weekend. The calm water might fool you, but those afternoon pop-up storms are a Florida tradition this time of year.
And for those keeping an eye on the tropics, there are two weak systems being tracked, including remnants of Dolly and a disturbance in the Gulf. Neither poses a threat to the Suncoast, and both are expected to fizzle out. So your holiday weekend plans are safe, as long as you make the morning your window.
