In a quiet corner of Sarasota, Suncoast Therapeutic Equine Partners is doing something a little different. The nonprofit, known as STEP, pairs gentle therapy horses with participants ages four and up who live with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities. The results go well beyond a fun afternoon at the barn.
The science is surprisingly simple. A horse’s walk is rhythmic, close to the motion of our own stride. As riders absorb that movement, they quietly build core strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Just as important, horses offer something hard to find elsewhere: a calm, non-judgmental presence that helps riders sharpen focus and grow self-esteem. The Suncoast View team recently visited STEP and got a firsthand look at grooming, guided riding, and one reporter’s turn in the saddle.
STEP keeps going thanks to community donors and volunteers, which means there’s room for you in this story. Whether you can give an afternoon or a donation, you can find more information at stepsuncoast.org. So we want to know: have you ever seen the difference a horse can make in someone’s life?
